Vintage and Tissues

I'll post the "PS" at the top: got this one today. Madeleine and her fabulous James. They've now been together for about 14 months, and are kindred spirits, sharing a wonderfully strange sense of humour, a love of music, and a reluctance to sleep before midnight at the earliest. He is a fearsomely good pianist, classically-trained but with jazz improvisation as his real passion. I love him to bits, which, frankly, is just as well.

**********

Well, I was going to wait until I had the "official" photos to post this, but I have some time today and I'm in the mood, so I'll go with the cropped happy snap for the time being.

This is Madeleine, the oldest of our three girls, at her Year 12 Formal a week or so ago. This is quite a big deal here, and comes before final school exam preparations take over every waking moment.

We looked for a very long time for a dress that was just right. Mads wanted something long and classical, but it was more a case of knowing what she didn't want rather than what she did. Funny - the specialist school she goes to has a dance stream and a music stream; the female dancers all wear short dresses, while the musos almost exclusively go "longs". Of course the dancers are very body-aware and confident, but I think the longs look classier (yes Mum).

Anyway - the story of the dress. My much-adored mother died quite suddenly when Mads was only eleven and in her final year at primary school. They were very close, and even now, some of Mads' most powerful creative writing brings up the pain of that loss.

After trawling though shop after shop looking unsuccessfully for the right dress, Mads remembered this one and asked if she could pull it out of storage. It was part of my mother's trousseau, and only she ever wore it. My mum was a very skilled dressmaker, and it's beautifully made in pure ivory silk with antique lace at the bodice, laced with rolled silk ties at the back. It is actually a nightdress, but we figured if turning underwear into daytime couture was OK for Stella McCartney then this was well within the rules for a school Formal.

As soon as Madeleine put it on she knew it was right. She told me she'd always wanted Grandma to make her Formal dress, and now she had. Hugs and tears for both of us, and the decision was made.

So here she is, at almost 18 years old, still thinking of the wonderful woman who loved and gave her her so much. I've always told the girls that Mum lives on through the people she loved most. It's nice that they feel the same way.

What a beautiful story, Margie. The dress looks stunning on her, and no wonder, with all the love that's gone into it and radiates from it.

You can tell Mads from me that both she and the dress look stunning. From what you have told, it sounds like she is a very special young lady. You must be extremely proud of her!

Traditions like this are truly special, and I mean both the dress which, coming from her grandmother, is not just a dress, and this Australian school tradition. Students should have this kind of things which bring extra colour to the ordinary studying. It's also a kind of a rite of passage, isn't it?

Oh Margie, I've been a bit lax in getting here...shame on me especially after my prodding you to write another post! But, my goodness, what a post! It brought tears to my eyes to see your gorgeous daughter in such a special and 'significant' dress.

She looks absolutely radiant, and how lovely for you that she could wear this momento to your mother with such grace. For one very talented young lady, she seems also to be one with deep attachments and strong loyalties. How lovely too that you still had this stunning gown....it was far too beautiful to sleep in anyway!

Wow.
I love this post. It is like a fairytale, and these days you so rarely hear of a gown being passed to a new generation... it is like the stuff novels are made of...
I am glad to know such magic really does exist, Margie, and your daughter is simply radiant. And yes, it is far too lovey not to be seen in public!

You are all lovely. Dale, I have been back over to yours, and have blubbed buckets and written enough homilies to cover a whole carton of matchbox covers. You are an amazing woman, and Beth's achievement is just huge - graduating a year early! Such things are not possible without loving support. Yes, I am lucky - obscenely lucky - but nothing is perfect, as you'll see when you read my ramblings.

Gypsy, Maria, Val and Stevie, thank you too for your very kind words. Maria, you're right, the Formal thing is special, and very much the highlight of the school social calendar. The before and after-parties are also important, but very much more casual. The latter was here at our house, and was quite a night. Again, funny - the dancers all went clubbing, while the musos chose to come to someone's house and just enjoy each other's company. They were still talking, laughing and listening to music at 4.30 a.am. It was great.

Vally - thanks for the compliment, but actually Mads is much more like Colin I think (although thankfully with less body hair!). She looks relatively fair at the moment, (midwinter), but has his olive skin and a rather exotic profile. Whenever she travels people assume she's "one of theirs" - she's been taken for Greek, Italian, Israeli, Austrian (which she half is by lineage) and French. She laughs and says she's "just a generic wog". (That, I have to point out, is not un-PC if claimed by one who has the birthright). I, alas, am a mere Anglo-Celtic throwback.

Was this an evening event?

In such a case, turning a nightgown into an evening dress is perfectly acceptable!

What a wonderful gift your mum gave her granddaughter - which, in turn, her granddaughter was able to give in return.

Haha Stevie - I thought that term was universal. Its origins are hazy, and definitely unpleasant (from "Golliwog" is one theory), but historically in multicultural Melbourne it is a derogatory word usually meaning a person of Mediterranean ethnicity. About twenty years ago the Greeks and Italians in Melbourne appropriated it for their own use as a badge of honour. It's now considered almost a term of affection, but should only ever be used as such and with humour, never as an insult.

Dale, yes, it was evening, and I like your thinking!

ahhh, okay, I get it now!
So, I posted a box of graham crackers to you today, and the post master said it would be a few weeks before you got them, but at least I got them in the mail finally!
I think maybe we need to all come up with our best S'mores memory to further entice our sweet Margie!
Mine... hmmm... gotta think... back soon...

Stevie you are a star! And yes please, I want to hear about everyone's best S'mores moments, and, of course, any takes on methods of preparation. I have to get this right. What sort of marshmallows? Dark or milk chocolate? All variations will be tried, I promise.

Thanks again Stevie.

What a lovely photo of Mad and James!

Speaking of universal, I think the fact that teens go to sleep no earlier than midnight is a global phenomenon.

I wonder where Mad gets her sense of humour from?

Hello Lace! Lovely to see you here. I must trip over to yours and catch up. Thankyou for the lovely comment.

Dale, I'm sure you're right about the sleep thing. I figure for these ones it's quite handy - if they're going to be trying to make a living playing gigs and concerts, the last thing they need is to feel sleepy at 9pm. As for the humour ... well OK we're all a little weird I suppose.

Gyps - I don't think Posh and Becks have anything to worry about. He may have a lot of hair, but I can't see James in an Alice band, and Mads has her own breasts. And eats.

Thanks Anne-Marie. I always think they look good together, though there's almost a foot difference in their heights, and for all Madeleine's dark colouring, her fella is pure strawberry blonde, and as fair as they come.

Dale - I copuld use a few more of those myself!

I am so thick. As I've just posted on Antoinette's blog, I thought hre name was an alter-ego of Anne-Marie's! I have no idea why I thought that, except perhaps that whenever I've seen them together they seem to be cyber-duelling for the computer. I think I assumed, A-M, that you had two sign-in ID's.

So a belated thank you to you Antoinette for your lovely comment. Now next time I make a complete tw*t of myself, will someone please tell me????

Hi Margie,
It's my fault you're so confused. Antoinette is a very good friend of mine and she spent a month here with her youngest daughter- they just left today to go back home to California. While she was here, she frequently used my laptop and surfed the net and the blogs using her own account. I am not used to looking at the account name when I post, and found myself over and over again leaving comments on friends' blogs using her account ID. I think Dale is the one who came up with the name Marie Antoinette, but anything signed XX AM is from me, albeit using my friend's account name by accident.

So, there you have it- the confusion was all my fault, not yours by any means. I'm sure she would have made a lovely comment, had she known you at the time. :)

I think your daughter and her fabulous James are striking because of the difference in colouring. MY sister, who is all of 5 ft, for example, has a wonderful boyfriend who is 6'6". Val and Lesley both can probably attest to the fact that they look great together.

Oh dear. You're very kind A-M, but I feel even sillier now! Antoinette will wonder who this mad woman leaving dopey messages on her blog is. Oh well, there goes my intellectual reputation (splutters tea all over Noddy picture book).

Funny, my best friend is a 5ft2 tiny married to a 6'6 giant. Opposites attract?

Dale! Don't think I don't know how rude you're being. Where do you pick this stuff up from?

Cheer up, Margie. You know what they say.
Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad.
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle,
Don't grumble, give a wistle!
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...

(the music fades into the song)

...always look on the bright side of life!
(whistle)

Always look on the bright side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten!
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing,

When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps,
Just purse your lips and whistle -- that's the thing!
And... always look on the bright side of life...

(whistle)
Come on!

(other start to join in)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(whistle)

For life is quite absurd,
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Forget about your sin -- give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it -- it's the last chance anyhow!

So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it.

Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true,
You'll see it's all a show,
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!

And always look on the bright side of life...
(whistle)
Always look on the bright side of life
(whistle)
