Sweet irony.

This morning I heard three normally intelligent people on the radio bemoaning the wide use of blogs and such forums as Myspace. The concensus was that such things simply allow people who have nothing to say the space to say it, and that there's absolutely no social or personal value in the experience at all.

Then, over the next ten minutes, they talked nostalgically about how wonderful it was for them when as children they had pen pals and through them were introduced to new people, other cultures, others' lives and new perspectives. Sometimes, apparently, they even had the opportunity to meet them. "And it's so sad that nobody does that any more."

Funny old world, eh?

PS: I'd like to wish any other time-wasting talentless social misfits who may venture here a very happy Easter, whether you're believers in the miracle of the Resurrection or simply the magical combination of chocolate and a day off work. Bless you all.

ah, chocolate and a day off!! yes!!

Interesting radio banter about blogging, maybe they should play back what they said after, about pen pals.

It has lots of value for me, I value all of the friendships I have made with blogging.

Happy Easter to you too xox

Hi Margie, I think the only thing I can say here is - rather pretentiously and pompously, I admit - 'plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose'!

As you say it's a funny old world, and always has been. I expect in years to come, our children will be nostalging (?) about the old days of blogging while they are busy making their own form of virtual contact with people in other parts of the globe.

Hoping the Eastern Bunny is good to you this year my lovely friend. That's what my students call Easter ....!

Hi Margie,

It sounds like the radio was having one of those "in my day, things were so much better because..." festivals. It drives me batty when people blabber on without realising, as Val put it, that it's more apples and apples than apples and oranges. The topic I usually roll my eyes about along the same vein is when people offer the opinion that the world is less safe now than when we were children.

I think I'll drizzle my weekend chocolate over a banana, just to be safe. ;)

Have a lovely Easter!

Yep, technology is a bogeyman that prevents them from seeing that it's the same thing, just different media. Oh well...

The Easter Bunny Val was referring to... Giant chocolate Easter Bunny sounds a bit dangerous. On one hand it might trample people under its feet. On the other... what if it gets too warm, and it melts all over the place?

Happy Easter!

Hi lovely Margie, I hope you're having a wonderful Easter weekend and relaxing in the sunshine with that lovely family of yours.

Big hugs to you, Colin and all the girls, and tell them bananas may be good but not to go too bananas over all those Easter bunnies.

Lots of love to you all, VallyP xxxx

Far be it from me to say, "Blah blah blah". No, not me!

But hey...

There can never be enough communication in the world.

I thought that is what I thought...I think.

Easter Tuesday, and time for a brief stint at home before continuting the term hols back at the Bay. It's a tough life. (Well it is a bit - there's no computer there!).

So it's good to see I'm not the only one who can't believe the silliness with which these guys were banging on!

Grace, you're spot on! I wonder if they did realise afterwards how daft they sounded?

Koos, I would never presume not to know the things that don't go on in your head (?), but I do know it's an interesting place.

Vally, your French quote is very apt, and I think you're right. I like the idea of an Eastern Bunny - here, though, we have the Easter Bilby (not kangaroo Gypsy - much, much smaller). Well, everybody still says bunny, but they're trying to make it a bit more locally-relevant. I don't care which it is, as long as it's made of chocolate and I can bite its ears off.

A-M, that one gets me too. No-one's dropping bombs on my kids, my husband doesn't have to go to war, and none of us is likely to be left deaf by measles, be crippled by polio or die in childbirth. Sadly, it's not that way for everyone, but in our neck of the woods it's pretty cushy. But don't forget - you can probably choke on a banana - better mash it to be safe.

Maria, I'm still gobsmacked that the "chair" of this discussion didn't realise how dopey he was being. He's an intelligent man, ex-lawyer, has three teenaged kids, is absolutely abreast of current affairs and is a razor-sharp interviewer. Either his brain was taking a holiday, or he was just cross because one of his sons had crashed the family computer by downloading internet porn. Or he hadn't eaten enough chocolate.

Gypsy - it's not a bad sort of club, is it? I must say I'm pretty happy with my membership. And see above re Bilbies.

Hello Mads my little Lindt Bunny. I am NOT old, and if you suggest it again there will be no more hidden treasures for you! And of course James is right I am fabulous and did not forget you just because you're 18 and can buy your own chocolate.

Dan, there is much wisdom in your "blah blah". Too much communication is never enough.

And Cheryl Ann, thank you - I hope yours has been a good one too.

Oh I am, Grace! And I'm six feet tall, blonde, deeply tanned and have a body like Venus after a boot camp and a full make-over.

Funny, when I met Vally she said she more or less expected all Australians to be really tall. I'm only 5'5 1/2, and my girls are shorter still - especially Emma, who's perhaps 5'1. Colin doesn't count because he's a johnny-come-lately to our (sandy) shores.

BUT, the beachy Amazonian-Aussie stereotype does exist, I promise you. Just not in this house.

Hi Marige....yes I meant that! Hoping you are well and have had a lovely Easter break. Koos and I talk about you often and how wonderful it was to meet your small but great family....see, I do read the other comments too!

If you are 5,5and a half (not forgetting that very important half), you and I are exctly the same height, because I've just been confirmed as being exactly that! The funny thing is that I'm the 'little one' with my girls. they are both taller than I, and I always put it down to growing up on that wonderful Natal farm...but maybe it's just genes after all.

Lots of love to you all and to your lovely Colin, but especially to you xxx

Margie, again you have managed to put into prose my very own thoughts...

Chocolate.
Day off.
Resurrection.
Pink bunnies.
Multi-coloured eggs.
Plastic hay.
Crosses, thorny crowns, nails and palm fronds.

By the way, does chocolate contain iron?

Oh Val!

You and Margie are both taller than I.
I have spent my entire life doing my best to rise above 5 ft 4 and 3/4...
Never did make 5,5.

Except when riding horseback!

Blogger Vallypee said...

Well, now I am surprised! Dale, I always imagined you to be so tall! I definitely had you down for a 5'8er. I don't really know why. I shall now have to adjust my entire image of you..how mind boggling is that..;-)

8:27 am
Blogger MargieCM said...

Shouldn't that be mind-BLOGgling?

Dale, I had you down as taller too. Maybe I associated height with all that outdoorsy healthy stuff you do - see, I can do stereotypes too!

And of course chocolate contains iron! And calcium, antioxidants, magical endorphin triggers ... um, and well, everything else you need to cure all known diseases and foster world peace. Certainly better for you than plastic hay, anyway.

Vally, so your girls are taller than you, while mine are smaller than I am. Hmm. I bet you cheated and fed yours.

12:08 pm
Blogger Dale said...

Wee small ones can do the outdoorsy stuff, too!
Beth is taller than I and both Bob and Jenny are leaning in that direction, too.
Oh well. S'not the size wot counts, as Sindy would so aptly say...

Knowing all that good stuff in chocolate, I can go, without guilt, and enjoy my sweet irony!

Oh Margie, I did laugh at your comment on Koos's blog! Yes, I suppose he might just come home with a few photos.

I also chuckled at Colin's wise words to Mad about the sheep. He is soooo English sometimes, isn't he? My dad used to do the same to me, and I'd forgotten that special type of tease...love it! Hope you're having a good day...or evening as is probably the case now.
