Oh Hell

I am so bad - so very very bad at this. I am missing all my bloggy fiends yet still cannot seem to find the time or mindspace to sit down for an hour or so and catch up. Random excuses and updates:

1. It's exam time. I am providing support, hugs, smoothies for energy, and whatever stress relief I can. So far either it's working, or it wasn't needed anyway.

2. On a personal level, all is well, all are in rude health, and all is happy, but as ever, life is full and demanding. Happily, it continues to beat the alternative.

3. Ghastliness of the year is that no sooner did I discover that tickets for The Who's one show in Melbourne next March were to go on sale, I found the date clashed with a music festival that our whole family is already committed to. I considered divorce briefly, but have bowed to the long term picture. (I am sure I will regret this in March.) Maria and Grace, I cannot believe I am telling you I won't be there.

4. Work is a shocker. Economic downturns mean tough times, and many of my colleagues have been casualties. This is no fun.

5. We are not getting a beagle, despite Mads' pleadings. I hear you Vally - they are escape artists and inherently pack animals, they howl if left alone for even a few hours and although they are intelligent and lovely, I am not looking for any complications to my life at the moment. (Soz Mads).

5. The rain in Spain falls mainly in the plain. Apparently.

6. Time for bed.

Oh Margie, who needs excuses? You've plenty more important things to do than blogging!

It's a good thing you did not get a divorce, because apparently the Melbourne concert is not the only date The Who are going to play in Australia. This was posted in a Who forum. Don't know if any of them are geographically close enough for you to attend though as I know Australia is a big country.

Australian tour dates from a source down under:

From the Dallas Crane Myspace site, now taken down but still in Google cache:

Sydney #2 and Perth listed both as Apr 1 so obviously something wrong there but looks good anyway.

Update: I've been told the Perth date is Apr 4.

LOL Margie!
I've missed your wit and insight on life. Your writing is fused with inserts of wisdom, wistfulness and humour... at times, I have this urge to reach over and pull your tongue from your cheek!

No excuses necessary! We all have busy lives and blogging does take up a lot of our precious time. I can so easily get sucked in, that I do indeed limit my own time on the computer.

1. If you were so bad at this, would we keep coming back?
2. I believe it wasn't needed anyway, but how could you not resist, as a mother, having the chance to look after your children?
3. Is there an alternative?
4. Could you consider divorce for a day?
5. Can we all hold hands and hang in there together?
6. Where does the snow fall?
7. Did you sleep well?

xoxo

Oh Margie, your quality is so much more than any quantity - mine included! It's just lovely to read that you are well, busy, happy and as full of gentle wit and warmth as ever.

I miss you terribly, but I do understand. I keep blogging because it gives me an escape from all the unrewarding creativity that I pour into teaching materials, and for which I am greeted with bored silence by this year's crop of spotty first years.

Your girls and your Colin are so full of life and energy that I cannot imagine blogging even comes close! Anyway, I am glad to see Maria has offered you alternative Who dates, so the divorce isn't even worth a flicker of thought. I am equally glad to see you aren't getting a beagle (sorry Mads). Did I mention I'd had one as a child? They are everything you say and more, despite being the cutest puppies in the world. Then finally, the rain may be falling in Spain, but it's spread a tad too far in this direction too, so I'll trade you for some of your drought.

Just drop in from time to time Margie, and we'll still be here. Lots of love to you, Colin and the girls, not to mention the inimitable James...big hugs, Vally xxxxx

I disagree with everybody. What could be more important than writing personal stuff on a whiteboard for the world to see? Airing your laundry – marvelous, so it is.

World is a shocker, aye, and I dunno about you, but an evening with the Who for me and a chum would leave me little change from $250. That’s a high maintenance marriage, when the same would feed a family for a couple of weeks.

It seems you also have the same dilemma as our next president – I’m with your Snoopy-loving daughter – Get the beagle: he’ll put a smile on your face when you know you want to frown. He’ll be the best of distractions in a crazy world, and when you chastise him for minor mischief, his eyes will remind you of the scheme of things, and will say, “Even so, I know you love me.”

Besides, I see a book on the horizon, "The all-new Journey of the Beagle - Evolution of a Modern Austrilian Family." Get to it.

Love,
P

Blimey, who would have thought that anyone out there even remembered me? Many, many thanks for all your lovely support.

Mads, I will watch all of these things ... sometime, when I can, thank you.

Maria, thank you so much for the heads-up on other dates! I may be able to swing Sydney, which is only an hour or so's flight time (or ten or eleven hours by car), and Adelaide may be do-able if that date's better. I will have to do some serious forward planning. I haven't seen anything posted on the Who site about these dates yet though, so as far as I know we can't book.

I'm a bit sad they're doing the Grand Prix, actually. For my money it's a huge fuel-burning noise polluting horror, which in Melbourne has attracted strong opposition for some years; it's in a residential area and takes over many acres of public parkland for a couple of months. All those F1 cars get specially flown out too of course. Not an event I'd expect a band like the Who, who do at least pay some lip service to sustainability, to be involved with. Still, let me be honest here - they're entitled to pick up what must be a great and well-paid gig, and I would have gone if I could have, so my thinking is every bit as dodgy as theirs may appear.

Dale, how are you my rugged-up friend? I will HAVE to find time to come and visit you today, and everyone else too if I possible can. Gosh I have missed you all, and am dyiing to hear all your news. Hope everything's going well in the land of moose and bears. Oh, that sounds like Alaska. Well, YOUR moose and bears. Of course you know exactly where the snow falls - in your back yard! Thanks so much for your response - you really made me smile. Divorce for a day, hmmm ...

Vallypee, thank you too so very much for all your lovely comments. Yes, things are busy, and at the moment we also have my niece staying with us for thre weeks while she does a Melbourne project with her school (she lives in regional Victoria, about two hours away from here by car.) Emma is off to India next Sunday for a 4-week trek / visit / stint of community service (again, through school), so we have been busily testing her hiking boots and filling her with rabies shots, anti-malarials, cholera prevention things and polio boosters. She has arms like a sieve, and says the oral cholera prevention thing is so bad she'd not convinced that Cholera would be worse. She'll learn. Anyway, that's all incredibly exciting. Mads and James have done their final exams and recitals for the year - all fab - but while the Uni year has wound up and Em has her last exam tomorrow, Soph's school year continues almost until Christmas.
Anyway, I'm very sorry about your brain-dead spotty first-years. I can imagine how soul destroying that must be.

Paul, I hope I have several things in common with Barack Obama, but unlike him, we will not be in the market for a dog of any sort just yet. I have to say I was incredibly excited (and relieved) to see him win the election. I think he is a truly good and impressive man. Your implication that I should work on giving blogging greater weight in my daily priorities has been duly noted. I get it - "Could do better if tried" (Story of my life.) Oh, and yes, the Grand Prix Who tix were expensive. $AUD225 each for a front-section priority position (and of course I'd have to do that). Still, I've only ever had the opportunity to see them once before, so yes, I'd pay it, and drag Colin along. He loved their show in 2004. We shall see what transpires with other dates, and learn to live on Vegemite sandwiches for a while.

Now to Grace - haha, divorce had your approval then? Sadly, these things have a habit of causing a degree of longer-term fallout, so perhaps not. Yes, it's truly crap timing - I can't tell you how miserable I was when I went to book and discovered the clash. The thing is, with family comes obligations, and sometimes your own priorities get a bit smothered. (Let me appropriate something here - Kids are for life - not just for Christmas?) Still, a who fan is forever too, so I will have to find a way to get to another concert.

Mads OK OK! I'll get to it soon, I promise! Btw, are you in for dinner tonight?

Well, Margie, I'm not really all that far from Alaska.
Bear and moose have a large range and they don't pay any mind to borders...

Rugged-up?
I hope that means something nice.

Haha, Margie, talking about Alaska, I've just been listening to some classic Sarah Palin...if that's what comes out of Alaska, maybe it's not a good analogy for our Dale...her wit by far surpasses....

Don't worry Grace - I know Who fans tend to be hardcore, but I was pretty confident even you wouldn't expect me to go that far ... Vally you are so right - it took me AGES to respond to all those comments! Had to be done though, an it was lovely to be able to do it.

Dale, of course it means something nice! Sort of cosied and muffled and wrapped in soft downy stuff. I'm madly trying to find an alternative interpretation, but clearly my mind is insufficiently naughty. Surprisingly.

Sarah Palin, Vally? Oh God, don't get me started ... and I'm pretty sure the only things she has in common with our wonderful Dale are vaguely meteorological, geographical and anatomical.
