S'mores for Stevie

Well, I finally managed to upload the photos from Colin's camera (I lie - I begged him to do it) and sort out the S'mores from the parties and the presentation ceremonies and the goats and all the other stuff that was there.

So, with another huge "thank you" to our generous benefactor Stevie of the Travelling Teacup (http://travellingteacup.blogspot.com/), here at last is documentary evidence that we too have known the wonderful cross-cultural delights of S'mores.
We did ours indoors, setting a fire in the front room. (In the fireplace, obviously.)

Note state of said room. More books than bookshelves, strange collection of wooden shoe trees on window ledge, photos on mantelpiece which have not felt the caress of a duster for many months. Emma on the left, Sophie at right, piggy in the middle. I appear to have lost the lower half of my legs.

What can I say? They are the sweetest, most indulgent thing ever. Mads (taking the photos) only managed three, but the rest of us were made of sterner stuff. We had to try all the permutations - Stevie had supplied dark, milk and caramel-filled chocolate along with some beautiful fudge and other goodies which managed to survive the attentions of our over-zealous customs inspectors. I'm drooling on the keyboard just thinking about it. (Customs inspectors do that to me.)

So here's to Canada - home of maple syrup, moose, ice hockey and S'mores. And good friends.

Ah, my Margie Marige, they look and sound too sinfully divine for words. I love the way you made it a family affair!

By the way your lounge looks so warm and inviting! Just my kind of room with books overflowing onto everything and soft lights and comfort oozing out of every cushion. It seems strange to see pictures of you in Australia wrapped up in jerseys, and sitting in front of fires. We always imagine Oz to have permanent summer!

Anyway, as for your missing legs, it's good to see that you can really get down to the business of enjoying things that yummy so seriously. If I can say so, you appear to be even more zealous in tackling the S'mores than the girls!

And what's this about customs inspectors? Is this some subconscious desire for formality and order..haha...I so enjoyed clicking on your photo and seeing all the heaps of books, shoe trees and photos. Glad to hear they are not frequently disturbed by the annoying attentions of a duster!

Mmmm Grace, they certainly are! That's why I had to lose the bottom half of the legs - had to get rid of the excess weight somehow.

Vally, the photos were taken quite a while ago, so probably in our Summer, but Melbourne's weather is notoriously weird. I notice the girls have their winter school uniforms on, and I rug up at the hint of a breeze, so theoretically it could have been any time of year. As for the lounge, well it's a work-in-progress, as is most of our house. (it's only been 19 years, after all). The room actually has four 8-foot x 3-4 1/2 foot bookshelves, but we are very bad at disposing of books and very good at buying them, hence the overflow. I can't really explain the shoe trees, except that I like them - they're quite sculptural, and look interesting with the artist's lay figures and the wooden glove-stretcher. The lack of dusting requires no explanation to a sensible person.

Customs inspectors .. ahhh. Suffice to say that as a continent, we are unusually protected from such nasties as rabies, assorted botanical and animal scrofula and fungal nasties. Their steadfast refusal to let in anything vaguely threatening this Nirvana of purity is inspiring. I'm sure they Dettol their crockery and kittens equally assiduously at home. Did I tell you they confiscated the fruit tea Stevie sent with the S'mores package? I got a VERY firm notice about it. Filthy dangerous stuff, fruit tea. Apparently.

Margie! I am so happy you have experienced S'Mores! They are really quite luscious, aren't they? Have no idea if Gypsy actually made any or just nibbled on the individual components, but I know she quite liked Graham Crackers!
Ah yes, the customs fiasco... I have been quite tempted to send an assortment of LOOSE fruit teas along with fruit flavoured marshmallows to see if you hate anything at all, but have resisted in case if got you and in any trouble!
Val, I never did put together your S'Mores package, a situation I really should remedy. We all have to know how lovely they are, after all....

I now officially bestow upon you honourary Canadian citizenship, which you can redeem for an extra bag of marshmellows at any Canadian grocery store.

I must say those look scrumulious!..
I,m ashamed to admit that when I received my pack off the wonderful Stevie, I didn't get as far as putting it all together and ate everything separate..well I couldn't resist!..(you were right Stevie!)

Love your digs, they look wonderfully bohemian..

Oh, yes and my other excuse was, I don't have that lovely open fire you have here, infact I don't have a fire of any kind here..hence the onset of hypothermia..

Hypothermia?? In May?? Gypsy, I thought you lived in England, not Iceland ;-)

Just cos you're a snackaholic...and can't resist nibbling at all those yummies before you got to making them...I know you see, cos I'd be like that too!

I’m glad to see you used Aero, and I’ll try that next time. Here, typically, Hershey is used. I never in my life dreamed that I would say such a thing about chocolate, but Hershey’s chocolate is such unpleasant stuff.

Stevie, I hate very little that is edible as it happens, but alas the customs guys don't see it my way. Humourless twits - what's wrong with a little foot and mouth and the odd fungal infection I'd like to know? We're all part of the Commonwealth after all, and I say "share it around".

Anne Marie - thank You! I accept with humility and joy. I like your national anthem better than ours anyway. As for the fire in Summer, it was late in the season, and Melbourne is prone to odd unseasonal days anyway, so we just grabbed our chance. It was still pretty warm though!

Gypsy, my digs are inded bohemian, with an occasional nod towards the squalid, but they are comfortable and very hospitable. I think Eclectic Chaotic is the style. Sorry you didn't get to try the assembled S'mores experience - it is amazing. I understand about the fire though - one of the reasons it took us so long to try them once the package arrived is that as AM said, it was summer, and generally too hot too light a fire. We could have done it outtside, but in Summer we have restrictions prohibiting open fires. Even the day we did them it was about 22degreesC - cool enough for a jumper after 5pm, but you'll see the girls were in shirtsleeves. Hope you are slowly returning from the blue of hypothermia now your weather is getting warmer - isn't it?

Val I don't believe you - you would assemble your S'mores carefully and precisely according to instructions. You don't get to be an expert with a terrifying selection of power tools by ignoring the rules.

Paul - gosh I owe you a visit or three! I've only had Hershey's chocolate once, and I have to say it seemed to be about 80% sugar. I'm becoming a bigger fan of the 70-80% cocoa dark stuff - Lindt or similar. Incredibly good for you, and a little goes a long way. The S'mores with the dark chocolate were amazing.

By the way Stevie - I meant to ask ages ago - did you make the wrapped toffee fudge that was in the pack? It was WONDERFUL.

I wish I'd seen a photo of you ust AFTER you bit into your s'more...
That's the fun part!

I love your front room and it did take me a bit by surprise to discover you have a fireplace. I always imagined it being too hot in Australia for one.
That's how ignorant of the world I still am...

The last time I had s'mores was with Steph last spring at Blue Lake. We had a fire by the lake and had a s'mores assembly line wasworking full-time to feed the crowd.

Great pics, Margie!

Margie, I am not sure just what I was saying, but I am sure hate was not the word I meant to use! I suspect I was meaning to see if you "get anything at all." lol!
and the toffee was made by a local store, but sadly they no longer make it. T'was one of my favourite treats. Sigh....
I should have sent the dark chocolate with orange flavour. mmmm.
Ah GYpsy, you can use even a candle to roast the marshmallows if need be! Val, I have Bert on the way to me, and then to you soon.
